When
many of us were growing up, there were really only
several well-known educational choices: public, parochial,
or expensive private schools. Yes, there were other
alternatives such as homeschooling, parent cooperatives,
and even Waldorf and Montessori schools. However,
they were viewed mostly as underground movements and
were not given much attention by the mainstream. Stigmas
were often associated with these educational options
as were labels such as “fringe” or “radical.”
Ironically, those same education alternatives are
now considered trendy and parents pay thousands
of dollars each year to send their children to private
schools, especially those that provide Waldorf or
Montessori curriculum. Another irony is that homeschooling
is actually the oldest educational method in the
world and now it is experiencing resurgence in popularity.
Unschooling, a relatively new concept, is also getting
a lot of attention these days.
Primal Parenting is a valuable resource
for parents in learning more about education alternatives.
We provide a venue for review and discussion of
these methods by teachers, parents, and specialists
in the field of education. In sharing our stories
and experiences with each other, we embrace our
interdependence while encouraging independent thinking.
